There is this person I know. We have the most amazing conversations because we never actually engage with each other. Rather, we talk about ourselves for hours without commenting on what the other person is saying.

Him: I have been writing a straight up horror movie off and on.

Me: The movie I’m making next is called We Are Monsters, and I guess it’s closest to a horror movie. But I don’t know.

Him: There was a time when it was coming out so easily now I hit a wall sometimes with it.

Me: I guess if a movie has monsters and it’s serious, then it’s probably a horror movie, huh?

Him: I want to do one scene involving torture by smashing teeth.

Me: I have this really cool scene where this kid eats bugs.

Him: I like to do stuff that has some sort of message.

It’s just this for hours.

We never say anything about the other person.

It’s awesome.

Graydon (6 years old): Where’s your other dog?

Me: Rizzo? He’s not around anymore.

Graydon: What happened to him?

Me: He died.

Graydon: That’s really sad.

Me: Yeah. He was really old, though.

Graydon: I’m never gonna let my dog die.
